Geo Trevarthen's
Shamanic Healing and Counselling Practice

When I had analyzed all the personal history I could think of...
When I had talked and emoted for years on end...
When I was ready simply to be well, to find my true self...
That was when I began to work with Geo.
I learned that my images and impulses are not to pathologized, but are messages from spirit...
I learned that spirit has continuing surprises and twists in the road...
I learned how to access that smile of joy that lies deep within the soul of all sentient being.

What a bargain.

Thank you for your interest in working with me. I work with people in three ways — as an anama chara or 'soul friend' in the Celtic tradition, as a shaman-priestess, and as a teacher. I work by phone, internet and in person. I've recently had to make changes in how I work due to the needs and schedules of my family. I'm a full time mum of two young children and my husband is working full time and finishing a doctorate. I write between 5 and 7 am before the tots get up. Given all that, finding suitable times to work by phone across assorted time zones has proved to be quite difficult. At the moment the most I can possibly manage with anyone new is about one phone session and a couple of follow up emails per month. I'm hoping to develop a class that can be offered to groups, perhaps including conference calls that will allow me to work with more people. If you're interested in either of these possibilities, email me at tuath (at) celticshamanism (dot) com.

Anama Chara Work

In earlier Scottish and Irish cultures, the 'soul friend' was a spiritual companion during life and guide for the soul's journey to the Otherworld at its end. As an anama chara, I act like a spiritual mentor or holistic life coach, a guide who can help you find a deep connection with spirit and a passionate and effective engagement with life. The first goal is to teach you the joyful state of spiritual awareness, in which you can experience happiness without clinging, and loss without despair. In this state, problems that you haven't been able to intellectually or emotionally resolve can be spiritually dissolved. You can then clarify and achieve the goals of your highest, divine, self and be of service to others.

We can work in many different ways as companions, using techniques of meditation, guided shamanic journeying, prayer, ritual, magick, visualisation and Gestalt and transpersonal psychology. We can develop a program of transformation tailored to particular areas you want to work on, or particular issues troubling you, or you can receive individual instruction on your shamanic or magickal path.

My range of experience also enables me to advise when you might need more specialised help in areas such as nutrition or complementary therapies. Obviously, I'm not a medical doctor, and the techniques I use shouldn't be a substitute for medical or psychiatric care.

Shamanic and Pastoral Work

I'm a hereditary shamanic priestess in a Celtic tradition (for details, see my biography). I'm also a minister in the Circle of the Sacred Earth, a church of animism fostering shamanic principles and practices, and have been recognised as a legal celebrant for weddings by the Scottish registrar, under the auspices of the Pagan Federation. (Click here for more on weddings and other rites of passage.) I can help you develop rituals and rites of passage. I also do a wide range of shamanic work, including soul retrieval, extraction, divination and various kinds of energy work. (Click here for an article I wrote on shamanic healing work.)

Teaching, Retreats and Tours

I teach various classes and workshops to large and small groups but also teach individuals as an anama chara. If you're in the Edinburgh / Borders areas or planning a visit we can arrange individual tuition, shamanic work and / or day trips combined with spiritual work to places such as the Eildon Hills, Arthur's Seat and Rosslyn Chapel. For those of you who'd like a longer trip in the British Isles, my husband, David, an archaeologist, and I can do personalised tours incorporating the sites and experiences you'd like.
